The forces standing in the way of a well educated Britain are:

1) ‘Unpredictable English Spellings’ which result in poor literacy standards and dyslexia! Sceptics still block efforts to implement an effective simplified alternative!

2) ‘Synthetic Phonics’ whose teaching methods do not cure poor literacy standards.
They leave untreated, thousands of irregular spellings that need simplification. Parents are spending money on Phonics instead of Phonetics. Do publishers care, that parents spending money on their children’s teaching books do not know the difference between ‘Phonics’ and ‘Phonetics?

3) ‘International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) spellings’ are not ideal for teaching the pronunciation of traditional spellings. They are designed to be applied to several languages and as a consequence use unfamiliar symbols as a spelling guide to English. Its use is not popular in schools.

The Sayspel Pronouncing Alphabet (SPA) is simpler and more accurate than the IPA.
It is made to match educated BBC English speech using letters from the standard English alphabet only. It is excellent as a pronouncing guide used alongside irregular Traditional Spelling or as an orthography in its own right to be used optionally by literacy handicapped people or as an alternative to traditional spelling.

Through exercises using poems, games and a multi-language converter, Sayspel teaches Traditional Spelling in parallel with Phonetic Spelling. Traditional or Sayspel orthographies are options. It is important that script using ‘Traditional’ spelling can be read and understood almost as easily as is Sayspel.
